About this fanlisting
This fanlisting is for the relationship between Susan Ivanova and Talia Winters, two characters in the sci-fi TV show, Babylon 5. Their relationship develops from distrust and antagonism (primarily on Susan's part) to mutual respect and friendship, and eventually love. I really like how the show took time to establish the bond between the two characters, and I think they work very well together. Susan was always one of my favourite characters - apparently tough and somewhat cynical on the outside, she also showed a strong sense of compassion. From the beginning, Talia seemed to see through the somewhat reserved exterior; she seemed the perfect foil for Susan, and proved able to bring out the commander's softer side. Although the relationship was cut short when the actress playing Talia (Andrea Thompson) decided to leave the show, the memory of their relationship lived on, and a later episode made clear how important it had been to Susan when she confesses that she had loved Talia. I would love to have seen the two of them given a happy ending, but the ultimate fate of Talia after she left the Babylon 5 station is unknown.
As well as liking the relationship itself, I also admire how those involved in the show spoke positively about having two potentially gay or bisexual characters. When the show began, there had yet to be a significant character involved in a gay or lesbian relationship in any major sci-fi or fantasy tv series.
For more about the relationship, and what those involved had to say about it, see the info section.
The title 'Touching Once' was inspired by a song by the band Renaissance.
