Designed and built by Robert Stephenson, Locomotion no. 1 hauled the first train at the opening of the first public railway, the Stockton and Darlington Railway, on 27 September 1825. After it was withdrawn from service it was used for some years as a pumping engine, and is now preserved at the Darlington Railway Centre and Museum.
