Ripley and Call
In Alien Resurrection, Ripley - or, to be exact "clone #8" - is part alien, part human; with the appearance and memories of Ellen Ripley from a life 200 years in the past. Annalee Call appears human, but is in fact an 'Auton', an android created by androids, one who escaped the re-call and massacre after they rebelled against their programmers.
At the start of the film, Call is working as a mechanic aboard the unregistered freighter, the Betty, which is carry cargo intended for a top secret medical research facility. Having learned of the plan to clone Ellen Ripley in order to release the alien queen within her, Call has joined the crew with the plan of finding and destroying the Ripley clone before the alien can be born. But by the time the Betty docks, the alien has already been removed from Ripley. Call had expected the Ripley clone to be a simple by-product, to be discarded once the scientists had obtained the alien. She is thus surprised to find Ripley still alive, and at their initial encounter she appears both intrigued and repelled by Ripley's new identity. Ripley shows an immediate interest in the younger woman, though the nature of her interest remains ambiguous.
Distrustful of Ripley's alien nature, Call is reluctant to let her join forces with the crew of the Betty when the aliens escape. Gradually, however, the two form an alliance. Call's feelings toward Ripley seem to change when Ripley discovers the remains of her seven cloned predecessors, moving more towards sympathy. In return, Ripley shows sympathy towards Call when her true identity is revealed to her crewmates. Call is ashamed of her non human identity, but Ripley simply accepts her for what she is, and encourages her to use her abilities to save her companions and destroy the aliens before they can reach earth. She also appears protective towards her, moving swiftly to her defence when Johner starts to threaten her, and later rescuing her from the alien 'child'.
When the Betty reaches Earth, Ripley and Call share their first glimpse of the planet together. The special edition version of the film contains an alternative ending showing Ripley and Call after they have landed on earth, which hints more strongly that they intend to stay together as a team.
Ellen Ripley is played by Sigourney Weaver, and Annalee Call by Winona Ryder.
