In brief:
After drifting for many years, Ripley's escape pod is salvaged by a deep space operation. She awakes to face an inquisition from the Company (Weyland-Yutani) over the loss of the Nostromo, and to the discovery that the planet on which they encountered the alien life-form has been colonised. When contact with the colony is lost, Company executive Carter Burke askes Ripley to accompany an expedition to the planet in order to destroy the aliens. Despite her suspicions of the Company's motives, Ripley agrees. Accompanied by a marine corps, they arrive to discover that the threat is even greater than they anticipated.
